Art classes by Soroptimist International Pune Metro East

Art classes were held for the Pre primary Classes from November to March 2011 there were several breaks in this period for festival holidays and winter breaks.

SIPune Metro East conducted these classes to bring in a little colour and joy to the children, as no art teacher was available. Our member Namita Mukerji coordinated the classes, and being an artist herself, designed the syllabus. the children were taught basic colours basic shapes and then how to use the basic shapes when drawing  simple objects. Every classes had at least two members from the club present and we were assisted by 2 teachers from the school. GREAT Foundation provided the  crayons and drawing books. Poster colours and brushes were brought in the Soroptomists’ club. The classes ended the classes on 16th March, when Namita encouraged the children to do spray painitng of an ABC chart which was later given to the school. the club also gave drawing books and pencil bags with a pencil, rubber sharpner to each child present. It was a wonderful opportunity for the club to help such young children and show them how to use colours. SI Pune Metro East would like to continue our association with GREAT Foundation and the cantonment board school and give similar classes in the coming term.

 Future Plans:

Along with GREAT Foundation, the soroptomists will give a short 2 month (once every week -preferably Saturdays) session on equpping young school going girls with Life skills. A team of 4/5 members would conduct this. The meduim of instruction will be Hindi and Marathi. This would be to encourage the girls to ask questions on personal hygiene, sexual behaviour , menstrual cycles and feel free to talk to us. Perhaps these are things they cannot address to their mothers and teachers. They probaly have questions, doubts, and misconceptions about several issues and we would like to be their mentors.
